fantastic five: mauritian hotel breakfasts

This series is about my favourite five hotels by category.

In what I call my travelling years, the three years I spent reviewing luxury hotels across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa for Kiwi Collection – at the time the world’s largest independent luxury hotel reviewer – I was constantly looking for the “perfect” hotel. But even after several hundred hotels a year (about 400-500 annually) my search never revealed that one hotel, that perfect place. Actually, I don’t believe there really is such a hotel… However, there are a few runners up which came pretty close to perfection, who turned my stay into a memorable, lasting, and thus unforgettable experience.

After years of skipping a substantial morning meal and instead having only coffee and cookies in the office, I rediscovered the beauty of breakfast. If you are similarly inclined and happen to be planning a trip to the isle of Mauritius, here’s the scoop on Mauritian room service breakfasts (in random order) to help you pick your place to stay-slash-nosh.

The Oberoi, Mauritius

Overlooking my private plunge pool and the Indian Ocean in the distance, this breakfast came with a butler who poured the frothed milk over my café latte at the table. It also came with my own toaster so I could toast bread at my leisure after I was done with my yogurt.

Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa

Overlooking a private plunge pool (another) and vast garden, I enjoyed this breakfast with my favorite iPod tunes, thanks to the Bose Sound dock on the patio.

Shanti Maurice – A Nira Resort

With a view of the island’s most secluded beaches, my breakfast came after an early morning yoga session and thus felt twice as good.

Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita

The sea urchin scrambled eggs with asparagus and caviar caught my eye and I deterred from my usual selection. What an exquisite choice it was!
